New Characters in a Sunday Doodle

A short series of odd characters and their pet --I ran out of paper for "sermon notes," and had to draw on the back of one of the purple announcement sheets. My scanner is broken--actually, the driver is corrupted and Canon has been no help in updating it--so I used my camera to photograph the drawings. The originals are in #2 pencil and then high lighted with the "dodge" tool in PhotoShop to give them a look of depth being added with white chalk. As always, click on the drawings to see a larger version.

Doodling Jesus in the Temple

CLICK ON PICTURES TO SEE ENLARGEMENTS AND DETAILS.
On a visit to the in-laws' the sermon was about the boy Jesus being found by Joseph and Mary discussing scripture with elders in the temple. I think the other drawing is just of the Jesus' friends standing around wondering when the service will be over. I didn't have any blank paper handy, so the church bulletin sufficed.

Drawing in Church---Again

I don't just draw during the sermons at my own church, I draw when we visit the in-laws' Baptist church as well. Let me say, I enjoy all the sermons and do actually listen to them. Sometimes--I never know when-- one of them will actually inspire ome of the subjects of the drawing. Maybe, we'll have a fund raising book published and sold to church members one day of my drawings through several years' preaching. The drawing must be sort of meditative for me while sitting there listening. A few random selections from over the past two years here.

Drawings for the Wagnon Angel

These are some drawings of an angel that will be converted to CAD files and cut on a waterjet cutter. The advantage to the CAD files is the drawing only has to be converted once andthen it can be cut as many times as needed in any size. Here is one of the birds. I migh even post it on my other blog Drawings Into Sculptures.

Maybe I'll post it here, too.

This is a photo of the model for the proposed sculpture.

Just Because Owl

Sometimes, I draw owls for my wife, Joy. I've done that since we were dating. I drew her this owl just for the heck of it last year. Along with a number of other owls, it perches over her desk.

23rd Anniversary Card

One of the things about being a professional artist is you're expected to create your own cards for birthdays, etc. I worked late on a sculpture commission the night before our anniversary and wound up drawing this card.
We tell each other silly things such as "I love you lots and lots like Hottentots, or rocks in socks, or locks in pots." So I did some silly drawings for the card, set type, then printed it out on large card stock. Got finished just before midnight of the anniversary!!!! (May 28) This is actually two drawings--CLICK ON EITHER ONE TO SEE
THE FULL SIZE.

The Pear Onions and Their Anxieties

Like a lot of my doodles, The Pear Onions and Their Anxieties began life on the back of sermon leaflets in October of 2005. CLICK ON THE DRAWINGS TO SEE ENLARGED VERSIONS

Valentine 4 Ewe

As mentioned before, I draw a lot of my own cards--this probably a false economy.
To paraphrase the Bible and Handel's Messiah, "Oh, we like sheep..." or should that be
"Oh, we, like sheep,..." What a difference a comma makes!
Anyway, here's the Feb. 14th drawings done by "Liberace Sheep, named Woolite" for his favorite Ewe.

Drawing for the Neighborhood Home Tour

This was based on a child like drawing I did for a Christmas card--here it has been reworked as a poster for a local Home and Garden Tour in Raleigh in 2004

The Mumbles

I started drawing "The Mumbles" while at an outdoor concert of the NC Symphony in July 2005. Soon, they spread to my church leaflets.

One of these little guys in the second drawing below, was the basis for a sculpture and series of drawings. The orginal mumbles below are hardly more than a centimeter high.

More raw scans of Mumbles--they kept showing up on church leaflets all through the year!

Christmas Labels 2005

My wife, Joy, loved all the labels I drew and used on her gifts and others' . She insisted I make copies of the quick pen and ink sketches.

Skull Carrot and the Man Bird

Yet more doodles on the back of a sermon leaflet --note my sermon note scrawled on the bottom. There are all sorts of characters on the page, but I just picked two to give it a title.

"Bad Eggs" and a Dog in a Gas Mask

The Saturday before the advent of the Pear Onions, other creatures were popping out on the cheap lined notebook paper I use to draw on. Bears, dogs, rabbits, "Bad Eggs" and a dog in a gas mask.
